This Lesson's Topic:  Puppy Care When You're Away
Pet Care When You Are Away
Puppy Care Tips When You Have To Leave Your Puppy Behind When You Travel:
  • You have several options for puppy care if you have to travel or be away from home for a while, for any reason
  • Plan ahead. If you need to travel at holiday time, the good pet sitters may be booked far in advance. Find a good local pet sitter before you need one through online websites that do some pre-screening like Sitter City.
    • They will want to come to your home and meet your puppy, hear about his habits, health, feeding, and exercise needs
    • They will need a key to get into your home while you are away (they often also pick up mail and newspapers and water houseplants for you if asked)
    • Make sure they are bonded and insured -- see how reliable and responsible they are in making and keeping appointments with you...if they can't do that well, how will they treat your precious furry friend?
  • Rather not deal with people in your home? Is Fido pretty adaptable and healthy? Try a boarding kennel with a good track record
    • Make sure to visit and tour the facility in advance of boarding your dog or puppy. Make sure it is clean and not smelly.
    • Look for a good space in which your doggie can sleep and walk or run
    • Plan to bring along a favorite toy and/or blanket if you can so that it helps them with familiar scents and routines.
    • To minimize digestive upset, provide the kennel with your dog's usual foods
    • Give them an adequate supply of your dog's medications, if any, including an extra day or two in case you get unexpectedly delayed from returning when you planned
